Remembering the 2010s

As I was scrolling through Tik Tok, as most do, more and more 2010 "nostalgia" videos were popping up on my for you page.  It was a simpler time, when we used :0 instead of 😦 and >:) instead of 😈. I quickly realized that many of us had the same childhood, however many of us didn't have social media at the time.  How was this possible? We didn't really communicate to each other which toys we bought or when our parents yelled at us at 9 at night for not understanding how to multiply fractions.  So why did many of us grow up experiencing the same memories? I came up with three ideas.

1. We are all the same people but we look different so maybe we just think that the people around us are strangers but really they're just us but with different features and so we just experience the same exact things.

2. The government created clones (our parents) and they made them all do the same things like buy all of us the same toys and come home right as you remember to take the chicken out of the freezer, and so we all experienced the same childhoods.  That would make us all grow up to be sort of similar, as we all grew up the same way.

3.  Other media, like commercials and ads in magazines, were exposed to all of us, and they knew what Gen Z children liked and catered to our likes.  So similar toys seemed appealing to us and we all wanted the same toys for Christmas.  And maybe our parents just had similar parenting techniques and so we all did similar things during our childhood.

My first and second ideas seem pretty smart and true, however I think the third one is the most reasonable.  Because many of us grew upon watching Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network, we all saw the same ads for the hot new toys of the year.  There will always be trends happening throughout our lives. Even now, many of us have Tik Tok downloaded on our phones, and we all use social media.  Even without media exposed to us, we will all live similar lives because of human nature. Generally, many of us like and dislike the same things. We like easy solutions, and getting the most out of our money spent.  As long as we all think similarly, we will all live similar lives.

  1. I have also seen a few of these videos myself and it is definitely nostalgic and cool to think about how many people experienced a similar childhood to us. But I had never thought of these videos the way you did in this post. The three ideas you comprised were new to me as I had never considered them before, and I agree with you in the sense that of those three, the third is probably the most accurate. Although we may not have realized it as kids, it is true that the media greatly influenced how we grew up, how our parents raised us, and even how our parents were raised. I mean, look at the difference between clothes in the 80s to clothes in 00s. Many people caught on to trends that were popular at their time, which I think is a main contributor to why so many people experience similar things while growing up.
